Background History

Ugyen Donga Chokhorling lhakhang is commonly known as Yonphula lhakhang. The lhakhang was founded as a residence by lam Karpo Rinpoche who was also known by the name lam Tshewang Penjor. He was the disciple of tertoen Dudjom Lingpa Jigdrel Yeshi Dorji. Lam mastered the tantric practices at Kongbu, Tibet, and was later, directed by his master to visit his karmic master Dudjom Rinpoche. According to oral narration by Tenzin Namgay (2022), lam Karpo meditated in Paro Taktshang and while meditating in the cave where Guru Rinpoche has meditated, he heard a clear voice from the Guru statue. He was said to have been astonished and felt himself in an illusion. Later, he was found to have talked to him by that very Guru Rinpoche’s Statue. Later, he returned to Trashigang and founded Yonphula lhakhang. Currently, the lhakhang is managed by lam Jigme Tenzin who is the descendant's lam Karpo. There are approximately 100 gomchens and there is a Meditation Center where many gomchens do meditate for a minimum of three years. After the completion of mediation, they are known to be tshampas and they follow the Nyingma Tersar religion. The lhakhang was initially built as two-storied and later renovated as three-storied in the 1990s.
