Background History

Chumphu Nye is a site of profound sacredness, known as the "Second Tsari," with the first being in Tibet. Its history is deeply rooted in Vajrayana Buddhism:

  • Divine Origins: The site was first blessed by Khadro Dorji Phagmo, who planted her hair there, which grew into the unique Tsari Yungma bamboo species,.
  • Guru Rinpoche: In the 8th century, Guru Rinpoche visited for two months to subdue demons and open the "gates" of the Nye,. He prophesied a future terma (treasure) of white and red rice that would bring prosperity.
  • Evolution of the Site: The site transitioned from a simple meditation center (Drupkhang) in the 15th century to a formal Lhakhang in the 18th century under 9th Je Shakya Rinchen,.
  • Sacred Relics: The Lhakhang houses the famous levitating statue of Dorji Phagmo (Vajravarahi), which miraculously appeared from Guru Phangtsho lake,. It also contains termas discovered by Terton Tsheten Gyeltshen and Terton Drukdra Dorji,.
  • Cultural Significance: The site is considered a "merit of a thousand folds" for any religious activity performed there,. It is managed under tight security by the Royal Bhutan Police to protect its sacred artifacts.
