Druk Choeding Lhakhang is a site of immense historical and spiritual importance in the unification of Bhutan:
- Founding:It was founded by Drukchen Ngawang Chogyel in the 16th century with the support of his patron, Gyalzom. The temple was completed, including its frescoes and murals, during his sixth and final visit to Bhutan.
- Zhabdrung’s Legacy:Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal visited in 1616 and used the temple as his temporary residence. It was here that he started his work toward the unification of the country and instituted the first Goenpai Wangchog (a prayer to Bhutan’s protecting deity).
- Conflict and Protection:The temple was the site of the first Tibetan attack launched against the Zhabdrung while he was in meditation there.
- The "Nagtshang" Name:During the era of the Penlops, the temple's courtyard was used to store grain paid as taxes, leading to its name Nagtshang Lhakhang (meaning grain storehouse).
- Sacred Relics:The main relic is a statue of Jowo Jampa (the Future Buddha). Other significant statues include the founder Ngawang Chogyal, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, and the guardian deity Jagpa Melan.
