Background History

Tshozhong dzong was built by Chhoeje Jamgoen Ngawang Gyaltshen of Sewala in the seventeenth century after he subdued the demons, nagas (serpent spirits), and evil spirits in the locality and the period of construction is unknown due to the lack of historical data. But in comparison to Chapcha Dzong in Chukha Dzongkhag having a similar structure with a similar layout which existed before the 17th century, we can assume this Dzong also existed before the 17th century. It could be considered a pre-Zhabdrung era Dzong.

Although the Dzong was once gutted by fire, it was reconstructed again to its full glory.
